Registering the Death
In Ireland, a death must be registered with the local civil registrar as soon as possible and no later than three months after the death.
The Registrar will ask for basic information including:
• Name, address and date of birth of the deceased
• Date and place of death
• PPSN
• Marital status
• Occupation
• A Death Notification Form, usually provided by the GP or hospital
If you are unsure where to register the death, we can guide you.
Financial Supports and Grants
There are several supports that may help with funeral-related expenses, depending on your circumstances:
Additional Needs Payment
A once-off payment that may assist with funeral costs. Applications are made through your local Community Welfare Officer or online through MyWelfare.ie.
Special Funeral Grant (Occupational Injury Benefit Scheme)
Available where a death results from a work-related accident or illness.
Bereaved Parent Grant
A lump-sum payment available when a parent with dependent children dies.
Credit Union Death Benefit Insurance
Some Credit Unions provide a contribution towards funeral costs. Contact your local Credit Union for details.
More information on these supports is also included in The Next Steps.
Grief Connect
Grief affects everyone differently. It is completely normal to feel tired, emotional or unsure of yourself in the weeks that follow. Talking to someone — whether a friend, family member or a trained listener — can help.
GriefConnect.ie includes links to support organisations and advice on looking after yourself during this time.
